What is RSS?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and allows websites to 'broadcast' information on the internet. This information can then be incorporated into other websites or into programs called RSS aggregators (or RSS readers) to provide a central place for a user to get updates.

News and other regularly updated pages are the most common broadcasters of RSS Feeds as then the user does not need to check the site to find if a new article has been posted and can rely on the RSS aggregator program to inform him/her.

Common aggregators include SharpReader, Awasu and RSS Reader which all function from your computer as programs. RSS Feeds are also becoming common on customisable home pages such as with Google and Yahoo!. New Internet Browsers are beginning to build RSS functions into themselves, Firefox and Internet Explorer 7.0 allow RSS Feeds to be read direct from the browser itself.

To use RSS Feeds you need to subsribe to one. This can be done by clicking on the RSS link, which is often a small orange image with RSS on it (see below), this will bring up a page of coding that is understood by the RSS aggregator. In a browser a button may be available which lets you subsribe to the RSS Feed. In RSS Aggregator programs and RSS Reader Websites you may need to copy the URL of the RSS Feed from the address bar into the program or website.
